Gurgaon: With increasing traffic volume on Golf Course Road, GMDA is planning to construct an underpass at AIT Chowk, one of the most critical junctions in the city. The project aims at streamlining traffic flow, reducing bottlenecks, and offering seamless connectivity between key residential sectors and commercial hubs.
In the heart of the bustling Golf Course Road, where luxury meets gridlock, AIT Chowk has long been the Achilles' heel of an otherwise seamless corridor. As thousands of vehicles converge at this critical junction daily, the need for intervention has become more pressing than ever. AIT Chowk serves as a vital intersection connecting sectors 53, 54, 55, and 56, with heavy traffic movement from Cyber City, Golf Course Road, and MG Road.It also acts as a key entry and exit point for commuters heading towards Delhi and Sohna Road via Golf Course Extension Road. Several high-rise condominiums, office complexes, and educational institutions have come up in the vicinity, adding to the daily traffic load.
Currently, signal-controlled traffic at this roundabout results in long snarls during peak hours, particularly during the morning and evening office rush.
This had prompted the city's traffic cops to ask GMDA to consider planning an underpass at this junction in Feb this year.
Though the proposal is in its nascent stage, the proposed underpass — if approved — will allow uninterrupted movement of through traffic along Golf Course Road while segregating vehicles moving in other directions.
Vehicles coming at high speed from Cyber City currently come to an abrupt halt, creating a choking point at this spot. While GMDA recently installed a signal at the roundabout, the sheer volume of traffic has rendered it ineffective.
"We are working on a solution to ease the congestion at AIT Chowk. Though the proposal is in the initial stage of planning, the underpass, when ready, will help eliminate traffic signals at this junction, ensuring smooth flow and reducing travel time," said a GMDA official.
Golf Course Road is one of the city's most premium real estate corridors, housing upscale residential and commercial developments. The road, which already has seven underpasses, was completed in 2018 to ensure signal-free travel from DLF Cyber City near NH-8 till SPR. Residents, meanwhile, backed GMDA's plan, saying they had been demanding an underpass at AIT Chowk for years due to worsening traffic conditions."This underpass has been in demand for long. Every day, during peak hours, there is a traffic snarl at AIT Chowk. Despite the widening of Golf Course Road and Rapid Metro connectivity, this junction has remained a major bottleneck. We hope the authorities will expedite the project this time," said DD Sharma, RWA president of Rail Vihar.
